"it's a mystery " "its a journey', "everyone has to find their own answers". these are typical replies that people give when asked about the human condition. human condition meaning all our troubles trials and tribulations, all our woes and worries.
" it's a mystery " is the overall the summary of our approach to the difficulties of the human condition to date by all on the planet.
the human condition is addressed by two main disciplines.
religious and secular
religion refers our problems to the supernatural and we then might draw some wisdom from whatever this offers. but if you wanted a summary from all the religions together you would just find disagreement. thus the vast array of bickering religions
the secular approach to our condition involves all our culture and wisdom and all disciplines relating to our behaviour.
if you wanted a summary from the secular world of the problem of the human condition you would just find disagreement. thus the vast array of differing approaches
prousts expressive view of philosophy is an example of the secular non mechanistic non scientific approach to emotions this presumes from the start that there will be no nugget of wisdom that explains emotion all expressive forms in literature art music poetry take the same line
our culture is almost always either contributing to or commenting on our condition for example, sport, which can be called a type of culture, contributes to our condition by providing: distraction, happiness, disappointment, friendship and all manner of emotions.
sport commentary and conversation involves looking at the behaviour and feelings of the players, as well as their physical function. the psychological and therefore emotional side is a huge part of sport.
apart from the way our culture deals with emotions, the wisdom of the disciplines of human behaviour study are the other way that we deal with the human condition: psychology, psychiatry, philosophy, occupational therapy, social work, general medicine... all deal with it but if you wanted a concise summary of what the problems are for humans based on these disciplines... you would not get a clear answer there would be an argument
so the religious domain provides gods, argument and mystery and the secular domain provides theories, argument and mystery.
that is our wisdom so far.
people are little helped by long complicated answers, which are worse when the word mystery is added.
