dna has wired us to have poor understanding of emotions which is like a gap in the neural connections between cortex and amygdala
the fuel of the amygdala with emotions then fills this gap of ignorance up with mindless chatter which keeps us hypnotized and frantic the stuff of our lives the strutting and fretting described by macbeth
our best efforts to improve these connections are through understanding this network setup and also disciplines like meditation/mindfulness/awareness
strangely, the effect of meditation is to disconnect our chattering cortex from the churning cauldrons of emotions so we seem to be increasing the disconnection, but the effect of this is to quieten down the neural traffic. when the neural traffic settles we often find a strange degree of peace/calm/contentment
by separating cortex and amygdala/emotion and decreasing their often frantic interaction/neural traffic we end up subliminally/intuitively being aware that the cause of our discontent is this ceaseless neural chatter.
this does not mean that continuing our usual pursuits is silly it just gives us a background contentment and understanding of what our minds are doing all the time.
we can then reduce the extent that our cortex and emotions are ordering us around and decreasing our contentment.
the more feverish the neural chatter between cortex and emotions the closer we come to being out of control eventually, in more extreme cases the result is drug abuse, madness or crime.
