conatus

spinoza used this term to describe impetus to motion
and striving to persevere in being
opposing everything which take our existence away
he sees this as directly due to laws of nature
that all we do is explained by the physical components
that there is determinism
what we do is because of our physical makeup

antonio dimasio,  argues that
human affect arises from conatus

the point missed in this is that affect or emotion
is produced by dna
and is an instrument for dna survival

this even though spinoza sees conatus as
the force for self preservation

giambattista vico linked god
as provoker of  conatus
which then is the animator of
metaphysical points instead of atoms
and provides motivation

the truth is that it is chemicals as dna
which drive all our behaviour
